Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary

Zander Westbrook Design supported the Audubon Society in developing a planning-level analysis and conceptual design recommendations for accessibility improvements at the Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary. Our team documented existing conditions and assessed opportunities to improve accessibility throughout the Sanctuary, with a focus on creating an accessible route from the parking stalls to facilities within the site, providing an accessible route to an accessible toilet facility, and identifying other opportunities to improve accessibility within the Sanctuary.

The project provided the Audubon Society with a clear understanding of existing accessibility conditions and a framework for future improvements. Conceptual recommendations balanced accessibility and visitor experience with the Sanctuary’s sensitive natural resources, existing site conditions, and the historic character of the property.

The Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary has stewarded this vital section of shoreline in Marin County, California. Located on Richardson Bay within the larger San Francisco Bay Area, the Sanctuary encompassed 10.5 acres of uplands and approximately 900 acres of subtidal bay. The site provided important habitat for wildlife while also serving as a place for education, community engagement, and connection to the natural environment.
